Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi has announced his candidacy for the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s presidential election. Speaking at a press conference in the Diet Building, Hayashi expressed his intention to run in the party’s presidential election, stating that he aims to conduct people-friendly politics that will give all citizens peace of mind.
The official start of the presidential election is set for September 12th, with voting and ballot counting scheduled for September 27th. This marks Hayashi’s second run for the party presidency, having previously contested in 2012.
Representing Yamaguchi Constituency No. 3 in the House of Representatives, Hayashi has been elected to the House of Councillors five times before. Throughout his political career, he has held various cabinet positions including foreign minister, defense minister, and agriculture, forestry and fisheries minister.
Hayashi joins three other LDP lawmakers who have officially expressed their intention to run in the election: Takayuki Kobayashi, former minister in charge of economic security; former LDP Secretary General Shigeru Ishiba; and digital minister Taro Kono. With multiple candidates vying for leadership within the party, it remains to be seen who will emerge as its next president.
The outcome of this election will have significant implications not only for Japan’s ruling party but also for its future policies and direction. As voters await further developments leading up to September’s elections, all eyes are on these candidates as they present their visions and strategies for a brighter future under their leadership.
