The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education has recently given the green light to a $9 billion measure aimed at improving school infrastructure, technology, and equipment. The decision was made during a meeting held on August 7, and now the measure is set to appear on the November ballot. If approved by voters, this measure will provide funding to upgrade and modernize deteriorating school facilities in order to enhance the learning experience for students.
The main goal of this measure is to improve school accessibility, promote student health and well-being, and encourage energy efficiency. In addition, it aims to expand outdoor spaces and food services for students. Superintendent Alberto Carvalho submitted a staff report emphasizing the need for modernization in order to ensure that students are prepared for success in the 21st-century workforce.
According to California law, this measure requires approval from at least 55% of voters. This high threshold ensures that there is significant support from LAUSD stakeholders such as parents and educators. The LAUSD Board of Education firmly believes that this measure is crucial in providing safe and up-to-date facilities necessary for student learning in today’s world as well as college and career readiness.
As one of the largest school districts in the country with over 600,000 students across more than 1,000 schools, LAUSD has a tremendous responsibility to ensure that each student receives an education that prepares them for future success. The board recognizes how important it is to have modernized facilities so that every student has access to technology and resources needed for their educational journey.
Over time, LAUSD has faced challenges maintaining aging infrastructure. Therefore, this proposed measure presents an opportunity not only to revitalize dilapidated buildings but also inject new life into them. The funds will primarily be used for infrastructure modernization as well as replacing outdated equipment with newer models that are more efficient – ultimately ensuring smoother operations within schools. Additionally, it will enable LAUSD to improve accessibility within schools while enhancing outdoor spaces where healthier activities can take place.
Back in 2008, LAUSD’s Measure Q bond generated $7 billion which was distributed among district schools for infrastructure upgrades including technology enhancements - all contributing towards creating better learning environments. Measure Q resulted in updated air conditioning systems being installed along with improved classroom technology setups alongside beautifully landscaped outdoor areas throughout various campuses across the district.
With this new proposed measure on hand now,
LAUSD hopes not only build upon these successes but also provide even more substantial upgrades throughout its entire district.
