Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held a meeting with former U.S. Ambassador to Japan and Senator William Hagerty at the Prime Minister’s Office on Friday. The purpose of the meeting was to reaffirm the importance of Japan-U.S. cooperation in addressing issues related to China and North Korea.
During the meeting, Prime Minister Kishida emphasized that the Japan-U.S. alliance remains steadfast and unwavering. He called for continued cooperation between the two countries in order to maintain and strengthen peace and prosperity in not only the Indo-Pacific region but also in international society as a whole.
Senator Hagerty, known for his close association with former U.S. President Donald Trump, stressed that regardless of who leads either nation, the bond between Japan and the United States will remain unchanged. This statement takes into consideration both the upcoming Liberal Democratic Party leadership election in September and the U.S. presidential election in November.
In addition to their meeting with Prime Minister Kishida, Senator Hagerty and his delegation also had discussions with Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa, Defense Minister Minoru Kihara, as well as Akira Amari, former secretary general of the Liberal Democratic Party.
The purpose of these meetings was to further strengthen ties between Japan and the United States by engaging in productive discussions on various issues concerning both countries’ interests.
